What happens when Shibusen's Two-star scythe Meister Maka Albarn crosses path with the mysterious artefact know as The Mask?
Well it seems that when the two meet only Chaos and Madness cannot be far behind as the Mask transforms poor Maka into a much more crazed and insanity possessed version of herself wearing a dress of Black Blood.
-The idea behind this piece was to have a character wear The Mask that was really grounded in the Soul Eater universe, and to show off the style of that universe.
did a fantastic of drawing Maka in a style very similar to that of Atsushi Okubo's original works.
-While colouring I realised that if I stuck to the digital style of Atsushi Okubo's works Maka would be very flat to some degree, so I decided to use a large range of his styling from his art book "Soul Eater Soul Art" (Which I have a physical copy of) and mix it with aspects of my own. As for example Maka has a layer of skin temperature which ontop of it has the much harder shadowing which in turn gives her a more 3Dimesnional appearance.
-I had a lot of fun while colouring experimenting with stuff that wasn't in the original lineart drawing such as all of the glowing effects coming from the various Masks as well as the glowing lines on Maka's face in the third panel which I have never attempted before. Thanks to
for help with aspects of the colouring, it is always great to have help and suggestions when colouring as it certainly improves the final product.
-With regards to why the Scythe has the word "MASK" across the blade it is a reference this Soul Eater cover piece : z.mhcdn.net/store/manga/252/16…
Also it fits rather well with how over the top Soul Eater can be and with The Mask that is no exception.
-Finally I am going to talk about the background behind Maka. The background was inspired by one of the sunset pieces in the Soul Eater Soul art book , along with a mixture of photos I have taken myself of sunsets. It took a rather long time to create just the background , as the background itself is comprised of six layers of various clouds and colours to create that effect. I think in total it took me nearly 3-4 weeks to do just that background as I did it first after completing the flats.
